Buying an Antique Clock

There are many factors to consider when you want to buy an antique clock. This list is not inteneded to be all encompassing but merely a guide to help you in reaching your purchasing decision.

Tips for buying an antique clock:

1. Do you like the clock? As simple as this may sound in my mind it is the biggest driver in your long-term satisfaction with your clock purchase. If you like the style and appearance of the clock it doesn't really matter what I think or anyone else thinks. If you like clock when you make the purchase you are going to happy with it for years to come. If you buy an antique clock because someone else told you that you should or that its a good investment, and many antique clocks are, then there is a chance that at some point in time you are going to look at that clock and say "why did I buy that?".

2. What is the condition of the clock? If you are buying a clock for the purpose of adding to your collection or as an investment you want it to be as close as  possible to it's original working condition. The closer it is to the way it was created by it's original maker the more value the clock is going to have and the more value it is going to carry going forward. The next step would be a clock that has been restored to it's original condition. You get the idea here, right? As close to original condition as possible.

3. What is the history of the clock? Was it owned by royalty? Was it owned by an important historical figure? These are the types of factors that can help a clock escalate in value over the long haul.

4. Are there any identifying marks on the clock? Are there original manufacturing marks or ownership marks that would help determine the ownerhsip path and origin of the clock. Some times these are very simple to find and sometimes not. Look for a future article on this website defining some of these marks.

This is just quick simple guide to assist you in reaching your decision to buy an antique clock.
